Families, teachers, and students who write to TGA often ask a version of the same question: how does this award sit next to the competitions we already know? The honest answer is that it does not sit on those competitions. It sits beside them. The student STEM and academic calendar is a landscape, not a ranking. Different events train different muscles. Choosing well means knowing what each one is for.
This page is TGA's public reading of that landscape for 2026. It is written for secondary-school and university students, and for the adults who advise them. It is not a claim of affiliation. TGA is not a feeder, qualifier, or national partner of any of the events described below. We name them because they are the poles around which serious students already orbit — and because a student who understands those poles will make a better decision about whether a Singapore summer intensive is the right next step.
TGA does not claim affiliation with Regeneron ISEF, SSEF, iGEM, the James Dyson Award, Imagine Cup, or the World Scholar’s Cup. Mentorship at TGA is provided by scholars from NUS, NTU, HKU, and the University of Cambridge as already described on this site; those names describe the academic backgrounds of mentors and panelists, not a formal university partnership or joint degree.
If there is a global north star for school-age scientific research, it is still the science fair — local, national, then international. The form is well understood: a student or small team frames a research question, gathers data, builds a poster, and stands beside it while judges walk the floor. The virtues of that form are real. It rewards patience, experimental hygiene, and the ability to explain a method to a stranger. It is also, by design, a research exhibition rather than a design studio or a viva.
SSEF is Singapore's principal school-level research exhibition, typically convened in the first quarter of the year under the Science Centre Singapore, the Ministry of Education, and A*STAR. It is the domestic gate through which many Singaporean and Singapore-based students enter the international science-fair circuit. Projects span the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, computing, and mathematics. Judging is project-based: hypothesis, method, results, discussion, and the student's command of the work in conversation.
For a student already inside a research mentorship — a school science research programme, a junior college project, a university lab attachment — SSEF is often the most natural public stage. It is local enough to be reachable and rigorous enough to matter. It is also, structurally, a fair: the artifact is a poster and a conversation, not a prototype defended in a room of eight teammates.
TGA is not a substitute for SSEF and is not a pathway into it. A student who has done SSEF will find TGA's research-and-framing days familiar, and its defense days less so. A student who has not done a science fair can still thrive at TGA; we do not require a prior research poster. We do require the willingness to put a claim on the table and survive a question that was not in the brief.
The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair is the global science-fair pole. ISEF 2026 is scheduled for Phoenix, Arizona, from 9 to 15 May 2026. Students arrive as finalists from affiliated fairs around the world; they exhibit original research; they are judged by working scientists and engineers; they compete for awards across disciplinary categories and special prizes. ISEF is, for many families, the most recognizable name in school science. That recognition is earned. The standard of work on the ISEF floor is high, the logistics are demanding, and the week itself is a professional conference in miniature.
ISEF's calendar sits in May. TGA's Singapore intensive sits in the northern-hemisphere summer, after most school-year fairs have closed. The two events do not collide. They also do not substitute. A student who has spent two years on a single experimental question will find ISEF the right public for that work. A student who wants to spend seven days inside a live urban system, choose an AI approach under critique, and defend a prototype in a viva, will find TGA the right public for that work. Both are serious. They are not the same sport.
We mention Phoenix 2026 because students planning a 2025–26 year need the date in one place. We do not screen TGA applicants on ISEF status, and we do not write letters that imply an ISEF relationship we do not have.
If the science fair is a research exhibition, iGEM is a design-build-test community that happens to be enormous. The International Genetically Engineered Machine competition organizes undergraduate and high-school teams around synthetic-biology projects, then gathers them for a Grand Jamboree that is part conference, part poster session, part festival.
See how TGA teams are builtThe 2025 iGEM Grand Jamboree was held in Paris from 28 to 31 October 2025. Organizers reported more than 4,600 participants, more than 400 teams, and more than 50 countries. That scale is the point: iGEM is a global synthetic-biology commons, with a wiki culture, a registry of parts, and a judging process that looks at both the biology and the team's human-practices work.
The 2026 iGEM Grand Jamboree is scheduled for the Paris Convention Centre, 13–16 November 2026. Students who are already inside an iGEM team in 2026 will spend the northern autumn in a very different room from TGA's July intensive. The skills overlap at the edges — framing a problem, documenting a method, standing up in public — and diverge at the centre. iGEM is about making biology programmable, with all the wet-lab, safety, and community obligations that implies. TGA is about making an urban intervention defensible, with all the civic, ethical, and design obligations that implies.
A university student who has done iGEM will often be a strong TGA teammate: used to documentation, used to division of labour, used to a deadline that does not move. A secondary-school student who has not done iGEM is not at a disadvantage. We do not run a bio-track. We do not issue iGEM medals. We do not claim a pipeline. We name the Jamboree because it is one of the largest student technology gatherings on earth, and because a serious 2026 calendar should show it.
Two other student competitions occupy the invention and software poles. They matter to TGA applicants because they train adjacent skills — and because they sometimes attract the same students who write to us in September.
The James Dyson Award is an international student design and invention prize. It is open to recent design and engineering students (and, in many national programmes, to those still enrolled) who can show a physical product or invention that solves a real problem. National rounds feed an international shortlist. The public-facing artifact is usually a designed object: a device, a material system, a product that can be photographed, prototyped, and, in the best cases, manufactured.
The Award's virtues are industrial and tactile. It rewards students who can move from a user need to a working thing, and who can write about that thing without hiding behind a slide template. TGA shares the insistence on a real problem and a visible artifact. TGA does not share the product-design brief. Our artifacts are urban: a service map, a civic prototype, a policy-aware AI concept, a model of a precinct. A Dyson-minded student will be comfortable with TGA's prototyping day and less comfortable, perhaps, with a viva that asks why the intervention should exist in a city at all.
We list the Award here as a peer in the invention landscape, not as a partner. Students may enter both in the same year if the calendars allow. We do not advise anyone to treat TGA as a rehearsal for Dyson, or Dyson as a rehearsal for TGA.
Imagine Cup is Microsoft's long-running student technology competition. Teams build software — often with cloud, AI, and accessibility components — and present it through national and regional rounds toward a world final. The culture is product-and-pitch: a working demo, a story about users, a sense of how the thing might scale. For computer-science undergraduates, it is one of the most visible global stages that still looks like a student competition rather than a venture showcase, even when the two blur.
TGA uses AI, but not as a product category. We ask teams to select an AI concept appropriate to an urban problem and to explain, in their own words, why it fits and what it costs. That is closer to a policy seminar than to a hackathon. A student who has done Imagine Cup will usually be fluent in demo craft and in the vocabulary of machine learning as a service. At TGA, that fluency is an asset only if it survives a question from a panelist who is not impressed by the stack. "Why this model?" is a different question from "does the demo run?"
Again: no affiliation. Imagine Cup remains Microsoft's programme. TGA remains a Singapore summer intensive with a viva at the end of the week.
Not every serious student event is a STEM event. We include the World Scholar’s Cup because many TGA applicants have already stood in a room where the sport was argument, not experiment — and because that experience is more relevant to our defense protocol than a coding badge.
The World Scholar’s Cup is a global academic programme for teams of students, built around a shared curriculum that changes each year. Rounds typically include a scholarly bowl (team quiz), collaborative writing, and debate, with a tournament culture that travels from regional events to a Tournament of Champions. It is not a science fair. It is not a hackathon. It is an academic competition in the older sense: reading, arguing, writing, and performing knowledge in public with teammates.
We do not treat WSC as a STEM equivalent, and we do not want applicants to pretend that it is. We treat it as adjacent. A student who has debated under WSC rules has already practiced the TGA habit of answering a question they did not write. A student who has only ever built in silence, then presented a rehearsed deck, has not. The defense on day seven of TGA is closer to a short viva than to a quiz bowl, but the underlying courage is similar: you are on the record, with teammates, in a language that is not always your first.
TGA is not a WSC event. We do not use WSC cases, we do not staff WSC rounds, and we do not offer WSC-style points. We mention the Cup because a teacher building a 2026 calendar for a verbally strong, technically curious team should see both names on the same map.
A third family of student programmes sits closer to TGA's subject matter than any of the above: urban, civic, and smart-city challenges. They are less standardized than ISEF or iGEM. They appear as university summer schools, municipal hackathons, UN-habitat youth forums, architecture charrettes, and one-off "future city" competitions run by governments, foundations, or firms. Their quality varies. Their common brief is some version of: the city is a system, technology is inside it, and students should propose something.
TGA belongs in this family, with a specific shape. We are not a weekend hackathon. We are not an architecture studio that happens to mention sensors. We are a seven-day in-person intensive in Singapore in which teams of eight work a real urban problem through research, AI reasoning, prototyping, and a live academic defense. The city is the curriculum, not the backdrop. Mentors and panelists include scholars from NUS, NTU, HKU, and Cambridge. The cohort is capped. The honors are plural — the Galaxy is eight awards, not a single trophy — because urban work is plural.
What distinguishes a serious urban challenge from a themed poster session is constraint. A good brief names a place, a public, a time horizon, and a thing that can fail. A weak brief says "smart city" and waits for a dashboard. TGA faculty veto vague framings on day one for this reason. Students who have done municipal hackathons will recognize the temptation to solve traffic with an app. Students who have walked a Singapore housing precinct with a notebook will recognize why that temptation is not interesting.
We encourage applicants to treat other urban challenges as complementary, not competitive. A spring studio, a local civic hackathon, a geography fieldwork module — any of these can prepare a team for TGA without duplicating it. None of them, on their own, is a seven-day viva with a published rubric.
A one-page comparison, written in the same spirit as the rest of this site: plainly, without inflating our neighbours or ourselves.
TGA is for secondary-school and university students who want to do a week of serious work on cities and AI, in person, under critique. It is not for students who need a medal that already has a Wikipedia page. It is not for students whose only goal is a line that sounds like ISEF. Those students should go to ISEF, through the affiliated fairs that feed it. It is not for teams whose centre of gravity is a wet lab. Those teams should go to iGEM. It is not for inventors whose object is a consumer product. They should look at Dyson. It is not a software pitch night. That is Imagine Cup's job. It is not a general-knowledge tournament. That is the Scholar’s Cup.
What TGA is: a small cohort, once a year, in a city that makes urban-systems questions unavoidable. Singapore's Smart Nation infrastructure, multiethnic civic compact, and dense university ecology are the working conditions. Teams eat together, walk precincts together, and defend together. Every participant leaves with a verifiable TGA-CERT identity. Some leave with a Galaxy honor. All leave having been asked, in public, why their idea should exist.

James Dyson Award national deadlines typically fall in the middle of the calendar year; international shortlisting follows. Imagine Cup seasons vary by region and should be read on Microsoft's student programmes pages. World Scholar’s Cup regional and global rounds run through the school year; the Tournament of Champions is a separate summer-or-autumn gathering depending on the season. We do not maintain those calendars. We maintain ours.
A student who attempts ISEF in May and TGA in July is not overreaching if the research project and the urban intensive are actually different pieces of work. A student who attempts to recycle an ISEF poster as a TGA prototype is overreaching, and the panel will notice. The same is true of an Imagine Cup demo wearing a "smart city" skin. We would rather you pick one thing and do it at full depth. If you pick two, pick two different things.
Do not build a résumé of logos. Build a year in which the student does one or two pieces of work that could survive a hostile question. The competitions above are instruments. Used well, they give a student a public, a deadline, and a standard. Used poorly, they produce a stack of certificates and a student who cannot explain any of them.
If your student is happiest in a lab notebook, start with the science-fair pole and ignore us until they are hungry for a different kind of room. If your student is happiest arguing a text, the Scholar’s Cup will teach them more, faster, than a week of urban prototyping — unless they specifically want the city as the text. If your student is happiest making a thing that works in the hand, look at Dyson. If they are happiest shipping software, look at Imagine Cup. If they are happiest when a problem is civic, spatial, ethical, and technical at once, write to TGA.
We cap the cohort at twelve teams because the pedagogy does not survive a hall of two hundred posters. That cap is a feature. It also means many good teams will be refused. A refusal from TGA is not a judgment on a student's science-fair work, iGEM wiki, or debate record. It is a judgment about fit for a particular week in Singapore. We say this because we have seen families treat every "no" as a crisis. It is not. The landscape is large. This page exists so that a "no" from us can still be a "yes" to the right neighbouring event.
